a / r (art / research) aims at bringing together, disseminating and promoting artistic research developed in the context of the 16 Higher Schools of the Arts of the Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles. This research, which develops organically in an infinite variety of contexts, is characterized by its dynamism, its diversity, its transdisciplinarity, and its constantly renewed inventiveness.
a / r invites you to join this moment devoted to an in-depth exploration of 5 artistic research practices, their methodologies and their forms of public appearance. This day will bring together researchers, students and amateurs to discuss these hybrid arrangements, their modes of circulation, and more broadly their engagement with the world.

Tom de Cock et Gerrit Nulens
Tom De Cock (1982) is Doctor of Arts (VUB and KCB). He received the Horlait Dapsens prize in 2007. Next to his position as percussion soloist at the Brussels Philharmonic orchestra, he has been working as a freelance musician with Ensemble Modern, MusikFabrik, etc. He is a fixed member of Ictus, Nadar, and Triatu. He is now working as the assistant percussion teacher at Conservatoire Royal de Liège.
Gerrit Nulens (1972) studied with Robert Van Sice at the Rotterdam Conservatory. He is a laureate of the Kranichsteiner Musikpreis (Darmstadt). Besides being a regular member of Ictus, he worked with Champ d’Action, Spectra, and the London Philharmonia Orchestra. Under the label PME he is publishing contemporary music with an emphasis on music with/for percussion.
Adrien Lucca
Born in Paris (France). Lives and works in Brussels since 2004. He was just awarded the prix Jules Raeymaekers (2021). Since 2009 Lucca has been developing an artistic practice around geometry, color, light, physics and perception. He has developed an in-depth exploration of the interactions between natural and artificial light, the color of pigments and glass for several monumental projects in the public space such as Soleil de minuit (2017, Montreal), Microkosmos (2018, Brussels), Dentelles de lumière ( 2018, Rome) or Yellow-free zone (2018, Rotterdam). Parallel to studying the use of light and color in art history, Lucca has studied the contemporary science of color from a number of specialists, which led him to build his own laboratory, in which he makes use of chemistry, spectrometry, electronics and computing for artistic purposes. Lucca's most recent research aims to enrich, deconstruct and reconstruct the very definition of the concept of “color” and defying our common sense, using a tool allowing it to program the physical composition of the light. Adrien Lucca studied at the School of Graphic Research in Brussels in Belgium (2004-2009) and was a researcher in the Fine Art department at the Jan van Eyck Academie in Maastricht in the Netherlands (2010-2011). He is professor at the National School of Visual Arts of La Cambre and at the School of Graphic Research, in Brussels, Belgium. Adrien Lucca is represented by LMNO gallery in Brussels.
Anne Penders
Writer, artist, Phd in art history, anne penders is an interdisciplinary artist working with text, images, sounds, archives, and calling it “writing”. Her work is poetical and political, always trying to question position (both theoretical and territorial) in a troubled world. After concentrating on a certain idea of China (2001-2014), she chose to focus her research around Greece (2012-2021…). An encounter with a biologist in Athens led to a long term ongoing project called “peripou”, born out of a research on memory and bees and leading much further. She currently lives in Brussels where she developps two new projects : “North America Backwards” and “shelter / nos échelles”. She has published around 20 books (essays, novels, poetry, artists books), made around 60 shorts films and 20 sound creations (documentaries and installations). She has taught in diverse art schools, and still does when invited.
Sébastien Schmitz
At the crossroads of artistic practice, research and pedagogy (IHECS, Phonurgia Nova, RITCS, IAD), Sébastien is interested in sound writings, in the aesthetics of sound in its sensitive, intimate and productive dimension. imaginary. A classical pianist, who also briefly played jazz, lover of urban nocturnal vibrations, deeply baroque and sensitive to polyphonic songs, he likes what voices say when we subtract the semantics of words, their prosody reminding us that we are part of the great orchestra of animals.In 2009, he discovered ACSR and a creative radio language. In 2015 he joined the Collectif Wow! with which he co-directs fictions, including Beaux Jeunes Monstres in 2016 (Prix Europa, Ondas, UK Drama, Gd Prix Nova, Length of Wave), Dans La Tenaille or Everyone Everywhere (2nd prize UK Drama 21). LCW! is a place of transdisciplinarity between radio and the stage. With Piletta Remix (Awarded at the Rencontres de Huy 2016, selected at the Doms, 600 performances), they explore the dramatic and aesthetic issues of a radio performing in front of an audience with headphones. With Dans les Creux Dangereux, created for the stage (Ear You Are and Bxl Podcast Festival), they experimented with transposing “live” to the studio (Phonurgia Nova Prize 2020).
Trans-media experiences allow him to confront the specificities of sound writing in various fields: photography (I'm Not Seen, Musée de la Photo de Charleroi, FI de Cortona, 2021), audiovisual (animated film Babines, prix de la Fessée, Paris, 2019), theatrical institutions (fiction series for VOIX.ES, TN), contemporary art venues (co-development of Webradio Kanal-Pompidou, 2021).
Louise Vanneste
After training in ballet, Louise Vanneste turned to contemporary dance and joined the dance school P.A.R.T.S., from which she graduated. She was offered a scholarship from the SPES Foundation (Be), allowing her to pursue her formation in New York City, including time within the Trisha Brown Dance Company.Since 2008 she is developping a choreographic work, favouring collaborations with artists from disciplines other than dance: Cédric Dambrain and Antoine Chessex for music, Stéphane Broc for video, the visual artists and lighting engineers Arnaud Gerniers & Benjamin van Thiel or Gwendoline Robin for performance and Elise Péroi for textile. Her works Sie kommen, HOME, Black Milk, Gone in a heartbeat, Therians and atla have been presented in Belgium and abroad: Kunstenfestivaldesarts - Brussels, Rencontres chorégraphiques internationales de Seine-Saint-Denis, Charleroi danse, Théâtre de Liège, Halles de Schaerbeek, Romaeuropa, ADC Genève, Tanzwerkstatt Europa - Munich… Besides her projects on stage she also develops video installations such as Going West and #1.She is currently working on two new productions for fall 2021, Earths and Metakutse, a site specific piece. Alongside her choreographical work, Louise Vanneste is involved in education and transmission for more than 10 years (ISAC, Amsterdam University, Extension/Toulouse, etc.). She is the creator of Earths, a piece for four dancers, which was shown at the biennale de Charleroi Danse in October 2021. Recipient of the FRArt 2021 (Art research Funds), she will dedicate this year a specific time for his research_PANGAEA, towards the territories of the imaginary and hybrid practices. Louise Vanneste is associated artist at Halles de Schaerbeek and she is “artiste-compagnon” at Théâtre de Liège (2018-2022). Her company Rising Horses is supported by Federation Wallonie Bruxelles.
