A leak occurs when something cannot be contained, when material or disciplinary borders are crossed. A leak is seen as a weak point, a problem that needs to be fixed and sealed. In my project, on the contrary, I try to think with leakage by exposing myself to the instabilities of an artistic process.
What Can't Be Contained operates at the boundaries of artistic and discursive practices, such as exhibitions and publications, performances and conferences. Using a stage set-up consisting of a live transmission from a USB microscope connected to a computer, the lecture-performance will activate and explore the leaks between body, medium and research object. The performance sets up an expedition into the microscopic depths, the material contaminations and unstable alliances between computer and body, screen and eye, digital and touch.
Along the experimental journey, a publication in the form of a visual essay will be developed that will explore the different material and discursive layers of the artistic research. Thus, the publication not only accompanies the emergence of an artistic process, but increasingly becomes an experimental object of investigation and experience itself.
What Can't Be Contained is a deliberately stumbling and stuttering research that explores its own media and epistemological conditions, its technological abysses, and its physical and social interdependencies. Taking an embodied position, this research project proclaims the non-contained, the porous, the uncontrollable as a form of being, of relating and of becoming, and thus understands itself as a political proposal.
