In this urgent time where big international decisions are being made regarding the start of an industrial extraction of the abyss, while many countries support the ask for a moratorium, this research tend to explore the issue of deep sea mining in the artistic field, more specifically in cinema. The aim of the research is to enunciate another storytelling of the abyss, while the industrials companies dominate the imaginary or have captured it. Analyzing the expansionist dynamic of our societies regarding the oceans (through stories from the whale-hunting period or based on ocean anthropology studies), meeting scientists specialized in benthic ocean but also policy makers, researchers and carriers of ancestral knowledges, this research wants to draw another story of the abyss. As a needed alternative, an urgent call to expose a critique on the dysfunctional tendency of raping deeper the earth. Through the reactivation of "ancient stories", the exploration on how to transpose other bodies's sensitivity (from the shrimp living on hydrothermal vents to the whales), I want to share a new sensitivity towards this space and analyse the deepness of an oceanic coloniality.
In collaboration with a Professor on bioacoustics, specialized in cetacean communication systems and anthropic sound pollution, and with a researcher from Ifremer (French Institute for Research and Exploitation of the Sea) specialized in hydrothermal vents, I want to learn from the last actual scientific knowledge and search for artistic traduction of it, to kill the idea of a "terra nullus" that has been projected upon the abyss. Above all this, I want this research to be a relay for Indigenous Voices which still don't have their sit on the table. I truly feel their views need to be heard and shared on this matter and I want this research to humbly contribute to that correction.
